The first Jewish Days of Tangier to mark International Women’s Day
was held from Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 March 2022
Under the aegis of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication,
Organised by the Fondation Lorin (Tangiers) and the Association AJM Les Amis du Judaïsme Marocain (Rabat)
With the participation of the Tangier City Council, the Israel Liaison Office in Rabat and the Residence of the Jewish Community of Tangier.
A project initiated and directed by Myriam Mesmoudi and Nacima Kerouad with the aim of encouraging interreligious and intercultural dialogue in the specific context of the crossroads of civilization that is the city of Tangier.
An unprecedented programme open to the public, three days of multi-disciplinary encounters: lecture-debate, guided tour, documentary screening, traditional meal and concert.

Conference-debate “The status of women in Jewish and Muslim traditions”.
Moderated by Margherita Muratore Balaclava
Aicha Haddou, Director of the Moroccan Centre for Interfaith Research and Training and Peacebuilding
Points raised: cultural and religious tolerance and diversity in Morocco, progress on women’s rights in the contemporary Moroccan context Simone Mrejen-O’hana, doctor in the sciences of religions and thought systems
Points raised: Jewish roots in Morocco, Moroccan Jewish onomastics, gender disparities in Judaism

Visit to the Medina and Jewish sites in Tangier’s old town, guided by Sanae Raihani, guide for the City of Tangier.
Places visited: Gran Socco, Rue Siaghine, Petit Socco, Bab Marsa, Israelite Cemetery, Rue du Portugal
End of the visit: Nahon synagogue and museum, presented by André Gomel, vice-president of the AJM association.

Screening of the documentary “Moroccan Jews, Contradictory Destinies” (2014), a collection of testimonies and explanations by historians about the waves of emigration of Jews from Morocco.

Followed by a discussion moderated by Yasmine Bouchfar Points raised: genesis of the film, investigation methodology

Saturday 12 March 2022 – 1.00 pm – 3.00 pm
Lunch at the Residence of the Tangier Jewish Community
Sharing dafina, the Sefera dish traditionally served with the second Shabbat meal, at midday on Saturday Celebration with a background of zemirot, liturgical songs, sung by Lala Tamar and René Ohana
Members of the Catholic, Jewish and Muslim communities gathered around the same meal. The meal was a symbol of conviviality, coexistence and good living together – very much in keeping with the way things are done in Tangiers.

Women once again take centre stage at the closing event of the first Jewish Days of Tangier: A parade of berberiscas, the traditional dresses of Moroccan Jewish brides (*)
Followed by a concert of Judeo-Andalusian songs by Lala Tamar (Israeli singer of Moroccan origin) and Anas Belhachmi (Moroccan singer, originally from the town of Chaouen), accompanied by four instrumentalists (**)
(*) Presentation by Sonia Cohen-Azagury, Berberiscas restorer, of five dresses from her collections Interviewed by Simone Mrejen-O’Hana
Points raised: symbolic element of the berberisca, state of the collections
(**) A strong symbol for this closing event: a concert introduced by a female song in haketia, the dialect of the Jews of Spanish Morocco.
